My fears when I first heard of COVID-19 + lockdown

Hi!

Welcome to this week's post, it feels great to be back! Lately, I started thinking of the first time I heard of COVID-19 and decided to blog about it. I think it would make an interesting post because everyone probably had a different reaction when they first heard of the virus, but today I'll be sharing how I reacted.

my first time hearing about the virus

First of all, I don't like germs, bacteria, or viruses, I don't have a fear of them, I just don't like them. I remember it was January and it was one of the last few days of our December holiday. Around this time my dad had already started working again so it was just us three at home (my mom, my brother, and I). My mom and I were sitting in the living room, and we like to have the radio on during the day.
This is when I first heard of the virus, the lady from the News segment said something about a virus and how many people were already infected. I wasn't exactly listening before because I was busy with something on my phone but this caught my attention and I listened. I think she mentioned where it originated but that was before I paid attention to what she said.
Around this time I started getting nervous because I thought the virus originated in South Africa (where I live). After the segment was over, my mom said something about the new virus and I immediately went to Google. I tried typing in "coronavirus" but I spelled it quite wrong until Google gave me the right answer.
I can't exactly remember what I saw but I remember being relieved that the virus didn't start in South Africa and I think I also saw the symptoms and things like that.
Eventually, my nerves were calmed down but I was always scared after hearing about it.

In February 2020 my mom, dad, and I went to the mall and one of my parent's friends, who they haven't seen in years (the last time my parents saw them was when I was very young), came over to us and my parents were super surprised to see him because he lives overseas with his wife and son. He invited us to join them at the hotel they were staying at and that afternoon we all had a lot of fun.
After we all had a wonderful day catching up and having fun, we were all talking about the new virus and my mom's friend said when she goes back home and back to work, she'll have to wear a mask since the virus was already in the country where they live. I remember thinking, that's scary - wearing a mask to work. I was shocked thinking about how people are starting to wear masks in countries that have the virus, to do anything from going to work to going to the grocery store.

lockdown

I remember reading about the first case of COVID-19 in South Africa and thinking about how scared I was. I was invited to a birthday party that was 1 day before the first case in South Africa was recorded, but I didn't go because I had a hair appointment.

After a few days, my dad got us a pack of masks, and my mom and I brought Dettol, soap, and hand sanitizers. But we didn't buy years' worth of toilet paper, lol! I think this was before lockdown.
In lockdown, my dad worked from home which was different and I think schools were also closed but I am so grateful we started homeschooling long before the virus happened so we were alright during lockdown. I must say when my dad was home I did a bit more work than I usually do because he's a strict principal, haha!
We ate delicious food during lockdown, and my mom and I tried new recipes as well. I even started scrapbooking and I made a mask for myself.
Lockdown was fun but the fear of the virus was still there. I remember how weird it was when we went to the store with masks on. I've only seen people wear masks in movies and TV shows and I never thought I would have to wear a mask one day.

Now, we're used to it, wear a mask when going out, always sanitize, keep your distance from other people and wash your hands afterward, even if you didn't touch anything. Social distancing is very important but I've developed an irritation to people who literally climb on your back in the line when waiting to pay for your groceries. Every store we go to has tape that marks where you need to stand and sometimes, more most of the time, people ignore it.
My dad would call them out and tell them to social distance, my brother does that as well. My mom also has the courage to do it but I will never be able to tell someone to back up a bit, lol. If you're like me, the best thing to do is to put your cart behind you so there's a space between you and the person climbing on top of you. We like to do this sometimes, stand by the tape where you're supposed to and if people are too close behind you, put your cart behind you so they can't stand so close to you. Hope this helps!
