My homeschool routine! 2021
Hey!
A while ago I typed a blog post on my homeschooling routine but I never shared the time when I do it or how I do it, I just shared the subjects I learn each day and called it my "homeschooling routine." But today I want to share my REAL homeschool routine - if you can even call it a routine because each day, it's different.
I think each homeschooler's routine changes every day. No day is the same. Today I might do a full day of Math and a little Science. Tomorrow I might do every subject you can think of or not do any work at all (I'm joking, not). The thing is - it's okay! If I did a bunch of work yesterday and nothing today - it's okay! I've realized I put way too much pressure on myself to do all subjects in 1 day. The secret to a successful day of schoolwork is - less is more!
For instance, instead of having 8 subjects each day and trying to do them all (while overwhelming yourself), you'll get the minimum done - which is what happened to me. But if you have 2-3 subjects that are most important and get the work done (stress-free) you did more schoolwork than those days you did 8 subjects. I just want to say that this is what works for me. If you can do 8 subjects in one day and manage to do lots of schoolwork - you rock! If you manage to only do 1 subject - you rock! There's no right or wrong homeschool routine, it's all about WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!
Now, enough of my babbling about homeschool, let me show you my homeschool routine (+ a bit of morning routine) ;)
my homeschool routine
I like to wake up at around 6:00 - 6:30 so I have time to enjoy my morning coffee. I like to relax a bit while drinking coffee until around 6:40. Around this time, I say bye to my dad since he goes to work and my mom and I get ready to workout. Some days I'll only get ready around 7:00 and start working out around 7:10 or 7:15. Other days later or earlier. I like to start with a 20 min cardio and after cardio, my mom and I like to do yoga or some other exercises.
I'll be finished working out around 8:00 and my mom and I have been enjoying a smoothie lately so we'll make a banana smoothie for breakfast.
I usually drink some of the smoothie till 8:15 - 8:30 and put it back in the fridge so I can go get ready. And when I'm finished getting ready - hair, skincare, etc. - I quickly put everything that's out of place, like my yoga mat and laundry, away and switch on my laptop. Then, I'll get my smoothie. It's about 8:40 - 9:00 when I start my schoolwork and on days when I don't workout, I start schoolwork around 8:00, it all depends on how my morning looks like.
For my first subject, I'll do English. I'll either type a blog post or a story which helps with grammar and also improves my writing style. English is a subject I want to do every day, since I enjoy writing so much and it's a crucial part of my life, basically. I like to spend about an hour doing English before I do Math.
Math is also a very important subject to me so I do it every day as well. English and Math are the two most important subjects I do every day. I'll also spend an hour on Math, and I get a lot done in this time. Sometimes I'll only do half an hour if I want to focus on another subject or if I only want to do a specific amount of Math.
This is where I just do subjects the way I like to. No schedules. Actually, I do have a schedule but I only use it when I've finished a subject and can't think of something else to do, then I'll have a look at it. But the rest of my schoolwork I just do because I want to. For instance, if I'm am in the mood to learn about the Hydrosphere, I'll learn about the Hydrosphere. If I feel like reading a science book, I'll read a science book.
Around this time I'll probably have a look at the schedule I made and decide what subject I feel like doing. I'm more likely to do something with science, nature, or government after Math so I'll probably do one of those.
Science - for science I like to do something with outer space or chemistry, or biology. There are some other things I like to do as well.
Nature - nature is fun to learn, and interesting. I like to learn about the four spheres or anything really to do with nature, to be honest.
Government - for government, I'll learn basics from taxes to debt, which is also interesting to learn and nice to understand.
So I'll be more likely to do one of these subjects after Math, sometimes I'll do 2 of these or only one. And I'll probably spend about half an hour doing these.
I do a lot of analyzing work so most of my subjects I'll do with analyzing. So after one of those subjects, I'll probably have a break or do something that's not a subject. I've actually been trying to incorporate 3 things into my week and that's unfinished work, reading / video, and art. I like to do 1 of each every day which is great at giving me a break from schoolwork while doing something creative and educational.
Unfinished work - sometimes I have unfinished essays or notes that need to be done, so I like to take time to finish them.
Reading / video - I like to watch a video or read an article on something interesting or educational.
Art - my favorite - art. I like to do something in my journals, create pins for Pinterest or do something else that's fun and creative.
Another subject I like to do is Social Studies. In SS I like to do US history (everything I learn is US-based) or geography. I do one of these for about half an hour.
If I don't feel like doing schoolwork I like to think of a project I can do for a subject. A few years ago I did a solar system project of all the planets in the Milky Way and it was a lot of fun. So I like to think of a fun project to do every few months.
Those are all the subjects I try to get done each week. There's no specific order I do them except for Math and English and I like to switch it up each day. I've learned to relax and do as much work as I want not as much work as possible.
I finish school around 12:30 - 13:00 and then I like to make lunch (probably something to do with pasta) and watch TV shows with my mom like Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 or any Afrikaans shows we missed the night before (then my brother watches with). The rest of my day I like to read, play June's Journey, make food, bake something or do something creative, or watch a lot of YouTube.
