"christmas doesn't have to be..." | Christmas Poetry Collection: Poem 6

Christmas doesn't have to be
wrapped perfectly with silky paper
A tall tree in the corner of the living room
The biggest gift or the most expensive one
Golden ornaments on the wreath on the
wooden front door or candles that smell of
pine and gingerbread from the store

Christmas can be
A phone call to a friend
A hug from that one person you
haven’t seen all year
A time of reflection on what you have
instead of what you don’t or
giving that man standing with inked cardboard
every cent you can find in your purse

Christmas doesn’t have to be about
who has the best family portrait
Flawless photos you spent hours taking
Which goals you did and didn’t meet this year or
whose house looks the best when decked in
silver and gold

Christmas can be
a prayer to say,
“Thank you, God, for all you’ve given me.”
A look in the mirror and saying,
“I am proud of you.”
Throwing out the stuff you didn't use this year
and focusing on the things that are true

Christmas doesn’t have to be
all things gifts and red and shimmering green
or about who has the most money
Let Christmas be something with
healing and love and grace,
lasting memories of meals being shared
and things that no Christmas ornament
can replace

 about the poem

Most of the time Christmas is portrayed as decorated trees and big gifts and expensive things, which loses sight of the real theme behind the holidays - meaning.
Like, being grateful for the things we take for granted, giving to those that need it most, saying "I love you" to the special people in your life, or a "Merry Christmas" card to someone you know is spending the holidays alone. And I wanted to write a poem about it.

Happy Holidays x
