"take a look at yourself" | Christmas Poetry Collection: Poem 5
Take a look at yourself,
my dear friend
You've arrived at December
Almost another trip around the sun
Through this year
did you think you'd be here?
When you sat in that exam hall
or stared at the roof of your
room in the hospital
Maybe you had to greet
someone special
Or lost invaluable belongings
Did you think you’d be here?
When the town you grew up in
faded further away in the
rearview mirror
Or something familiar
became unfamiliar
Maybe someone’s words cut
deeper than you thought
Or you gave one last treat to your
childhood dog
Take a look at yourself,
my dear friend
On those days you thought
would it ever end?
You probably didn’t think
you’d be here
Almost another trip around the sun
Only stronger and wiser
and very much loved

about the poem
I want people who have had a tough year to be proud of the fact that they've arrived at December. When the year brings all sorts of challenges, we can sometimes think will we ever get to the end of the year. I wanted to write a poem that acknowledges those feelings and experiences, but also shines a light on how we did arrive at the end of 2024, where you can look at yourself in the mirror and say, "I am strong".
