"this year was hard" | Christmas Poetry Collection: Poem 3
This morning I sat in front of my computer
as I prepared to write another poem about
pine trees and gifts
I realized there are people who can’t fathom
spending this month without that person
and I realized there are people who
dreaded seeing twinkling lights of
yellow and green and red because
this year has taken too much
So this poem is dedicated to those who
don’t want Christmas
Here is a few words to let you know
I see you, and
you are not alone
This year was hard.
As if your umbrella disappeared during
pouring rain
Or the roof was snatched from your walls
in disastrous winds
And it made you realize,
things weren’t as put together as you thought
This year took a lot.
Like a cooling fan during a heat wave,
one that made history
Or someone you couldn’t imagine life without
Maybe a dream that painted every canvas of
your future erased in one email
Or your perfect garden is now in drought
This year was unexpected.
Like something you thought was forever,
is now separated
Like the results of your exam that
doesn’t show the effort you put into studying,
even after you gave it your all
Maybe things happened this year that make you
cringe at the number twenty twenty-four
In this poem, I won’t tell you happy holidays
or give you encouraging words that last for
only a moment
Instead, here were a few words to let you know
I see you, and
dear reader,
you are not alone.

about the poem
I know that this year wasn't easy for everyone. I wanted to dedicate a poem to those who have had a tough year, because I think some don't feel like celebrating Christmas this year and I wanted to write a poem that they could relate to as well.
I hope next year will rebuild what was broken this year. 💗
